FALL FIELD TRIP SCHEDULE – AUGUST – DECEMBER 2008
August 30 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Bombay Hook NWR, DE. Peak time for shorebirds and early passerine migrants. Full day, bring lunch
September 20 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip: Fall Count. Full day. Help us count birds in as much of Kent County as possible in a single day; join a field party or cover your neighborhood anywhere in the county. Contact one of the leaders for more information.
September 27 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Turkey Point, Cecil County. Travel to Elk Neck State Park and walk to the Turkey Point Lighthouse, overlooking northern Chesapeake Bay. We'll look for land bird migrants along the walk and spend some time at the hawk watch during peak raptor migration season. Full day, bring Lunch.
October 4 – (SATURDAY) – Beginner's Bird Walk, 9:00 AM. Heron Point. Meet in the main parking lot for a leisurely walk along the river looking for fall migrants: flycatchers, warblers, vireos, sparrows, and migrating hawks. Two hours.
October 12 – (SUNDAY) – Big Sit. A different kind of field trip: join us at the observation platform at Tubby Cove, Eastern Neck NWR, to help tally all the birds seen from this single location. Drop by any time from first light to mid-afternoon and stay as long as you'd like.
November 15 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 7:00 am. Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (Horsehead), Kent Island. Varied habitat from wood-edge to marsh and protected cove provide shelter for birds of pine woods, waterfowl and other late-season migrants. Bring lunch.
December 14 – (SUNDAY) – Lower Kent County Christmas Bird Count. Full day of counting, followed by count down dinner. Contact compiler Nancy Martin for area assignments or more information.
FALL 2008 MEETING DATES
Meetings are held at 7:30 pm on the second Tuesday of each month in Wesley Hall at Heron Point, off East Campus Avenue, Chestertown. Light refreshments follow the program. The dates for the fall are:

October 14 – Southern Oceans Expedition - The Falklands, South Georgia & the Antarctic Peninsula - Phil Davis
November 11 – Birds of Queensland & New Zealand, including Penguins — Pierre Henkart
December 9 – Saw-whet Owls – David Brinker, Maryland Department of Natural Resources
SPRING FIELD TRIP SCHEDULE – JANUARY – JUNE 2009
January 4 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Kick off your birding year with a half-day at :
Eastern Neck NWR for waterfowl and winter land birds.
February 8 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip: Winter Count. Full day. Join the field crew or count in your neighborhood, anywhere in Kent County. Contact one of the leaders for more information.
February 22 – (SUNDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Blackwater NWR, Dorchester County. Prime wintering waterfowl and eagle country. Full day, bring lunch.
March 14 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip, 8:00 AM. Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot I County. Early spring birding for waterfowl, raptors, sparrows and the occasional surprise. Bring lunch.
March 28 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip: Owl Prowl. Meet at the Eastern Neck NWR Lodge at 7:00 PM. With cooperative weather, we hope this trip will bring us face to face with an owl or two after an introduction to local species and their calls.
April 18 – (SATURDAY) – Beginner's Bird Walk. 9:00 AM. Heron Point. Meet in the main
parking lot for a leisurely walk along the river looking for early spring migrants: swallows,
warblers, vireos, sparrows. Two hours.
April 25 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip: Millington Wildlife Management Area. 8:00 AM. We will search the fields and woods for songbird migrants: thrushes, vireos, warblers, and others.
May 9 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip: May Count. An all-day effort to census all birds in Kent County. Join a field party or count in your neighborhood. Contact one of the leaders for details.
May 16 – (SATURDAY) – Field Trip: Delaware Bay Shorebirds and Horseshoe Crabs. The annual May gathering of northbound shorebirds feeding on Horseshoe Crab eggs on the shores of, Delaware Bay is a migration spectacle. Birds should be abundant a week after the full moon. Full day, bring lunch.

Eastern Neck NWR. Includes a short meeting to elect officers for next year and gather speaker
and trip suggestions from members.
