- The Riverfront Concert Series continues with a performance by brilliant guitar duo Mac Walter & John Cronin. Three-time WAMMIE winner Mac Walter developed his unique fingerstyle approach to folk, rock, blues, jazz, and country at the Charlie Byrd Studio in Bethesda, Maryland. Heavily influenced by folk luminaries such as Doc Watson, Mississippi John Hurt, Dave Van Ronk, Dick Rosmini, and his own guitar mentor, Raun MacKinnon Burnham, he recorded three CDs with Deanna Bogart and also played with Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanon. John Cronin spent 7 years touring Canada and the USA with the hugely popular Ian Tyson Band. Walter and Cronin provided back-up guitar and vocals on Chesapeake Bay folk icon Tom Wisner's last album, Follow on the Water.
Riverfront Concert Series events begin at 6:30 p.m. on the back lawn of the Custom House. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided; attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs. Admission is free. - The Obsoleets are an American roots string band and show orchestra. This five piece band performed regionally at venues from New York City to Wilmington, Delaware. Most recently they opened for Chris Thomas King of 'Oh, Brother Where Art Thou' fame at the Kennett Flash in Kennett Square, PA. The core of the band, John Stovicek (guitar, banjo, mandolin), Parris Bradley (tenor guitar, ukulele, tiple, can-jo) and Steven Patrick Smith (percussion), is made up of theatre veterans who have collaborated on many performance projects including soundscape performances, original musicals, sound design for theatre productions (Arden Theatre Company, Villanova University, Amaryllis Theatre Company), Fringe Festivals (Philadelphia, New York) and national acting/directing theatre credits. Rounding out this dynamic five piece band is jazz artist Alan Lewine on upright bass and Qin Qian on erhu ('Chinese violin') who each have strong followings and national performance credits. Together they are clearing out the cobwebs on some choice old American Roots and Blues chestnuts, cooking up the blues classics and serving them greasy. Outdoors behind the Mainstay but the concert moves inside in case of rain. Bring a lawn chair. Free.
