Phase Two Closeout
A Public Hearing was held on Tuesday, June 25 at 9:45 a.m. in the
County Commissioners' Hearing Room, County Government Center, Chestertown,
Maryland for the purpose of receiving comments on the close-out of Phase
Two, Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the
Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) of the
"Housing and Rehabilitation Project", which improved the homes of low/moderate
income Kent County homeowners.
County Commissioners Larry B. Beck and W. Michael Newnam were in attendance
as well as, Jack Canan, Housing and Community Development Coordinator,
Kay Pinder-Almen, Administrative Aide, and members of the media. Ronald
H. Fithian, was not in attendance due to his participation in the Maryland
Municipal League conference.
The notice of public hearing was read into the record by Commissioner
Newnam.
Mr. Canan provided the demographics relating to the thirteen households
that have been the recipients of housing improvement assistance. Mr.
Canan also provided a map noting the County-wide locations of rehabilitated
homes including sewer connections, roof replacement, installation of
indoor plumbing, etc. The amount of $149,000 was granted form the State
for Phase Two out of the $300,000 originally requested.
A member of the media inquired as to the application process. Mr.
Canan advised that if an applicant qualifies for assistance they are
not turned down and are placed on a waiting list if circumstances are
not life threatening. He also noted that Mrs. Pinder-Alman assists applicants
in filling out low interest loan applications to ensure the process
is complete.
Commissioner Newnam stated that the Mr. Canan and his staff deserve
much credit for the services provided to the community.
