Welcome and Introductions:
Approval of Board meeting minutes: Board members reviewed meeting minutes from the May 22, 2008 Board meeting. Leon Frison asked for a motion to approve the minutes. Bill Clark motioned and Reverend Purnell seconded. Motion approved.
Program Committee: Community Enrichment Grants were approved by GOC. The next request of grants is due July 25th. The community can apply for a grant more than one time a fiscal year, however, they cannot apply for the same thing.
Finance Committee: Did not meet. Candy Edwards went over the unspent funds for FY08. The plans are to fund a position for a Substance Abuse Counselor at the Kent County Health Dept. This counselor will meet with the students in the KCPS throughout the week.
The LMB wanted to purchase a 15 passenger van to transport children with Medical Assistance or no insurance, to a dental facility in Perryville. Since the project is not complete at this time, GOC denied the request. However, after the project is complete, we can reapply for these funds.
Board Development Committee: Did not meet. Jeff Troester wanted to thank those Board members who had interest in becoming officers and their continued support. We would like to welcome the new officers: Jean Austin, Chair; Kerry Ahearn-Brown, Vice Chair; Amy Crowding, Treasure/Secretary; and Bill Clark, Member at Large.
Director’s Report:
- CPA – We are approaching the end of the 4th quarter for FY08. We met with our vendors and went over their programs that were funded this fiscal year. They are aware of budget cuts for FY09. The LMB has decided not to fund any programs with the KCHS because they are unable to provide information requested.
- All 4th quarter reports are due by July 10th.
- Drug Free Communities – ASAC is up and running. Their website address is www.kentasac.org.
- Youth to Youth (Y2Y) – There are 14 members of the Y2Y Program attending a national conference in Rhode Island on July 17th – 20th. Abby Joiner is asking for volunteers.
- Tea Party – ASAC along with Jaycees & Kent County Marching Band worked the funnel cake booth and raised approximately $300-$500.
- Kent County Fair – The LMB will have a table at the 4-H Fair with brochures and our sand art activity for kids. We are asking for volunteers from the Board members.
- Drug Abuse Prevention Day – ASAC will be holding its annual Drug Abuse Prevention Day on Saturday, August 16th. It will be held at the Elks Lodge on Rt. 20 from 10 – 1. Volunteers are needed.
- Truancy Diversion – This proposal was set to run for 3 years, however, GOC has taken 2 years back. There is another grant opportunity that came out for lesser money that was applied for. We should know the results of the grant by June 30th.
- Maryland Volunteer Coordinator – KCLMB has been accepted as a working site for recruiting volunteers to increase the values of developmental assets. Karen Cotton was trained as the Site Supervisor. GOC was very happy with our proposal.
- Rehab Option – We have been approved to receive funds for the Independent Living for youth between the ages of 14-21. This will be a 3-tier process starting with the youth being placed in a group home, from there to a therapeutic foster home; and the final step would be there very own apartment. This will help them learn the life skills they need to be successful on their own.
- Needs Assessment – The Needs Assessment has been finalized with the Salisbury University. The LMB has 10 copies of this manual. One copy will be given to the Kent County Commissioners and one copy will go to the Kent County Library in their resource section. Anyone interested can either have a copy emailed to them or come to the LMB office and check out a copy.
- Community Center – The site work for the center is going out for bid within the next 2 weeks. The County Commissioners should know by the end of July what the cost will be to build the Community Center as well as who will be the builder for this project.
- The LMB and the LMB Board members would like to thank the Kent County Commissioners for their support of administrative funds for FY09.
Leon Frison made a motion to adjourn meeting @ 5:35 pm. Motion approved by all.
Next Meeting: The next Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 24, 2008 @ 4 pm.
