The
southernmost third of the Chester River is one of the most beautiful
waterways on the Eastern Shore. Picturesque creeks enter the Chester
from both shores, and the Corsica River joins the Chester a few miles
above its mouth. The abundance of public landings and put-in points
make it possible to vary trip length to suit any schedule.
Crossing
the Chester can present a challenge to the novice. Paddlers may
encounter currents of up to two knots under certain wind and tide conditions;
and the prevailing southwest wind during summer months can create short,
steep waves in the afternoon.
Eastern
Neck Island forms the western shore near the river's mouth. Settled
by the Wickes family in 1650, the island is now a National Wildlife Refuge.
A circuit of the island is a must for any trip to the mouth of the Chester.
