Kent County Arts and Entertainment Events- April 2022

The class will be held at the Clay Studio from 2 - 4:30 pm on Thursdays, running from March 31st through May 5th. (6 weeks)

This course introduces the fundamentals of handbuilding to students of any experience level. Students will learn the process of handbuilding through pinching, coiling and slab building clay, and glaze their work into finished pieces to take home with them. Class time and the encouraged Open Studio practice time will enable students to create at their own level and improve their skills.

Included with instruction is twenty-five pounds of cone 6 clay.

Joe Holt, our host for the Mainstay's new First Friday series welcomes Philadelhia-based vocalist Paula Johns in a program they call "Motown and More". She and Joe, our resident impresario, join forces to pay tribute to the African American Grand Dames of soul music and jazz.

No experience necessary! Open to all ages (children under 14 will need adult assistance). Clay will be provided as well as many items to imprint texture.

You will make two lovely blossoms, a large Poppy and a Cala Lily, 3 to 6-inches in diameter on stems, to enhance your flower pots indoors or out. You will learn to hand paint them with underglazes the same day they are made. Colors and embellishments are up to your own creative instincts. The finished flowers will be bisque fired, and a clear glaze applied by the instructor resulting in a beautiful glossy finish.

Considered by many to be a "sacred magical art", the creation of a talisman with specific intentions written into the life-giving egg, the Pysanky is an ancient means to celebrate the cycles and events in nature and in life. Created using motifs rooted in nature and the cycles of life, designs are made with simple instruments (made of wood and copper) called kistkas, the humble materials of beeswax and candlelight, and intensely vibrant dyes.

Instructor will provide ALL supplies including specialized pysanky tools, eggs, dyes, & more.

Make a teeny-tiny model of your favorite book and create your own unique book-themed key chain!

Let us know the title of the book you'd like to have on your key chain when you register so that we can create a tiny cover for you to use on your key chain.

And, as always, there will be pizza for lunch!

The Mainstay welcomes back an old friend when Deanna Bogart returns with her spectacular combination of boogie-woogie, rocking contemporary blues, country and jazz. 40 years as a road musician, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist, Deanna is adored by her fans for her adventurous and diverse musical career. She is recognized for her dazzling keyboards, soulful saxophone, smoky vocals, and outstanding songwriting. Deanna is joined by her band the Blusionaires featuring Dan Leonard, Eric Scott, and Deren Blessman. Don’t wait to get your tickets! Advance tickets on the website are $25. The class will be held at the Clay Studio from 6 - 8:30 pm on Tuesdays, running from April 12th through May 17th. (6 weeks)

This 6-week course is intended to be a "next step" for returning beginners. Students will expand and refine their skillset through skills instruction and weekly project assignments. This class is a great opportunity for you to move beyond the basic techniques and deepen your experience with wheel-thrown clay.

Included with instruction is twenty-five pounds of cone 6 clay (Standard Brown 112) and six Open Studio tickets.

Join us for an afternoon of learning the art of melt-and-pour soap making!

In this collaborative program, you'll work together to customize the color, scent, and inclusions for our group batch of soap. At the end of the program, each person will take home a bar of custom made soap.

This 6 week course introduces basic pottery wheel techniques to beginning students with a focus on throwing bowl and cylinder forms. Students will be shown the step-by-step process of wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing clay into finished pieces. Class time and the encouraged Open Studio practice time will enable students to create at their own level and improve their skills with clay.

Included with instruction is twenty-five pounds of cone 6 clay.

Acoustic Duo Nook & Crannie (Ann Carey and Matt Mielnick) dip into familiar favorites by Patti Page and Rosemary Clooney, classic hits of Patsy Cline and Don Williams, and folk gems by John Prine and Joni Mitchell. Ann and Matt’s close duet singing follows in the tradition of great pairings like Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris and the Everly Brothers. Nook and Crannie know how to engage an audience with a rare combination of great original and traditional songs, stunning vocals, solid musicianship, and plenty of bad jokes

Kohl Gallery in conjunction with the Art + Art History Department at Washington College is pleased to present, "nothing to do but be with ourselves", the 2022 Studio Art Senior Capstone Exhibition, on view from April 22 - May 13. An opening reception featuring short artist talks presented by each artist will be held on Friday, April 22 from 4:30-6:30pm. Light refreshments will be served. The reception and ongoing exhibition are free and open to the public. Join us to celebrate these artists' accomplishments. All are warmly invited to attend.

In October 1998 21year-old University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten, and left tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. His bloody, bruised, and battered body was not discovered until the next day, and he died several days later in an area hospital.He was the victim of this assault because he was gay.Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of the killing.

The Washington College Concert Series presents Carolin Oltmanns, featuring the piano music of Couperin, Janacek, Beethover, Wilding, Debussy, Griffes, Sinding, and Liszt. Individual tickets are $20 (adults) and $15 (non-WC College Students / Seniors 65 and over). Youth 18 and under are free.

GRAMMY-nominated lutenist, Ronn McFarlane strives to bring the lute into today’s musical mainstream and make it accessible to a wider audience. Ronn is a founding member of the Baltimore Consort, touring 49 of the 50 United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Netherlands, Germany and Austria. Originally a student of the guitar, he graduated with honors from Shenandoah Conservatory and continued his studies at Peabody Conservatory before turning his full attention and energy to the lute in 1978. This program is made possible by the Hedgelawn Foundation

What's a dirt cup? A yummy dessert made of pudding, crushed up cookies, and tasty gummy critters. We'll provide everything you need to make, decorate, and when enjoy your dirt cup creation! All you have to bring is yourself and a love of the sweetness of spring.

"Paint the Town" is a 4-day event and artists have the opportunity to lose themselves while exploring the beautiful countryside and capturing it in their paintings. After 3 days of painting, artists gather back together on Saturday afternoon to frame & hang their finished work in RiverArts' gallery in preparation for the "Wet Paint Show & Sale. Once the show is up, the participating artists vote for "Best in Show" and "Best Body of Work". The ribbons will be placed just before the show opens to the public.

The Guild members have created more than 80 quilts through a variety of styles and techniques which will be on display at the show. Several of the quilts have won honors at the Kent County and Maryland State Fairs and at other quilt shows. The show’s market will be a great place for shopping, offering a diverse array of unique handcrafted items, quilts, books, patterns and fabrics. Our 2022 Raffle Quilt is "Autumn on the Bay"- using the Alaska pattern by Edyta Sitar for Laundry Basket Quilts. Raffle tickets will be available at the show.

Internationally renowned organist, Ken Cowan is Associate Professor of Organ At Rice University's Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas. He is making his twenty-fifth appearance of the concert series. His concert is not to be missed by any music lovers.

Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders are Mad Agnes. The genre-bending acoustic trio's live shows feature compelling songwriting, and masterful instrumentation on guitar, mandolin, percussion, keyboard, all tied together with “three-part harmonies as tight as jeans from the dryer”. They have been formal mainstage artists at the Regional Folk Alliance Conferences and have performed at some of the country's best-known listening rooms and festivals, including The Kerrville Folk Festival (TX), Mountain Stage Festival (WV), The Birchmere (VA), Bethlehem Musikfest and Godfrey Daniels
