The Driving Tour of Galena, Maryland

Founded in 1763, Galena is the former site of Downs Crossroads. In colonial times, silver was mined in the area and shipped to Philadelphia. Afraid that it might be captured by the British, the owner closed the mine during the War of 1812 and it has not been re-opened. The present name, however, may be a relict of the town's silver-mining days.

In Galena, turn left on Route 213 and drive 3 miles north to the Kitty Knight House. Here, in 1813, Kitty Knight confronted British military raiding parties sent ashore to burn the towns of Georgetown and Fredericktown and refused them entry.

Her house stands today as a reminder of her courage and heroism. If you continue north on Route 213, you will cross the Sassafras River separating Kent and Cecil Counties, and reach Chesapeake City and the C&D Canal.After visiting Galena and Georgetown, 3 miles to its north, turn around, return to Galena and follow Route 290 south to Route 313 south. There, bear left and cross Route 301 to Massey.
